Key points
- Leverage magnifies both gains and losses.
- Liquidation rules depend on margin calculations and contract design.
- Funding and financing can accumulate over time.
- Risk controls matter more than the maximum leverage number.
Leverage changes the shape of the trade
Leverage lets a smaller amount of capital control a larger position. That makes percentage moves in the underlying market produce larger changes relative to the margin posted. It can accelerate gains, losses and forced position closure.
The advertised leverage ceiling does not tell you the liquidation price, maintenance margin, funding cost or how quickly an account can become under-margined.
Read the liquidation engine
Platforms use different margin models, mark prices and maintenance requirements. Some positions can share collateral; others are isolated. Liquidation can occur before the position reaches a simple zero-equity intuition because the platform must protect against further losses and market movement.
Understand the mark price, maintenance margin, liquidation fees and whether an insurance fund or automatic deleveraging mechanism is used.
Compare risk controls
Look at maximum leverage by asset, position limits, margin mode, stop-order behavior and funding mechanics. A platform with lower headline leverage may still be more suitable for a particular risk-management approach.
Regulators repeatedly warn that volatility can be amplified in margined crypto products. Treat leverage as a risk feature, not a benefit score.
